Is Bugles (Original Flavor) Vegan?

Bugles Original (the plain cone-shaped snack) has been dairy-free since its introduction and the current 2024-2025 formulation from General Mills confirms no animal-derived ingredients in the formula itself. The six-ingredient list is entirely plant-based.

However, the packaging carries a "May contain milk and wheat ingredients" advisory, meaning the product is made on shared equipment or in a shared facility with dairy-containing Bugles flavors. For vegans who draw the line at cross-contact risk, Original is borderline.

For those who only exclude deliberate animal ingredients, Original clears the bar easily. Palm kernel oil is used as one of the oil options, it is technically vegan but controversial because of deforestation and habitat destruction; some strict ethical vegans choose to avoid it for that reason, not because it comes from an animal.

BHT (a synthetic antioxidant preservative) is vegan by broad consensus, though it has been tested on animals in regulatory safety studies, which a small number of vegans factor in. The flavored Bugles varieties, Nacho Cheese, Ranch, Caramel, and any limited-edition cheese or cream-based flavors, all contain real dairy ingredients and are not vegan.
