Is PopChips Vegan?
It Depends
Not certifiedPopChips are popped (not fried) potato chips sold in a wide range of flavors. Several flavors, Sea Salt, BBQ, Sea Salt and Vinegar, Nacho, Crazy Hot, are free of animal ingredients and suitable for vegans. Other flavors, Sour Cream and Onion, Fully Loaded, Cheddar and Sour Cream (Ridges), Aged White Cheddar, contain dairy in multiple forms. The brand is not vegan across the board; you have to check the specific flavor.
The catch: The savory cheese and sour cream flavors load up on whey, buttermilk, cheddar, sour cream powder, and nonfat dry milk, every classic dairy form shows up.

Which PopChips flavors are vegan?
| Flavor | Vegan? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sour Cream and Onion | Vegan | Current US formula (popchips.com) is dairy-free: potato, rice flour, avocado oil, lactic acid for flavor, yeast extract, parsley - no milk or whey. Older store stock or retailer listings may reflect a previous dairy-containing formula, so check the label on any bag purchased at retail. |
| Nacho | Vegan | Uses yeast extract, tomato powder, and lactic acid (added for flavor, fermentation-derived) in place of real cheese - no dairy ingredients in the current US formula. |
| Aged White Cheddar | Not Vegan | Contains whey, milk, cultures, enzymes, and buttermilk powder. Sold out on popchips.com but still available at Kroger, Target, Walmart, and Amazon as of mid-2026. |
| Sea Salt | Vegan | Six ingredients: potato, rice flour, avocado oil, potato starch, sea salt, salt - no animal products. |
| BBQ | Vegan | Seasoned with tomato powder, hickory smoke flavor, torula yeast, and yeast extract - no dairy or meat derivatives in the current US formula. |
| Sea Salt and Vinegar | Vegan | Potato, rice flour, avocado oil, vinegar, malic acid, natural flavors - no animal ingredients. |
| Sweet Heat | Vegan | Potato flour, rice flour, avocado oil, spices, paprika, yeast extract - no dairy or animal-derived seasonings. |
Sea Salt ingredients as of 2025: potato, rice flour, avocado oil, potato starch, sea salt, salt, fully vegan. BBQ also reads clean: no dairy, no meat, just potato, rice flour, avocado oil, sugar, tomato powder, yeast extract, spices, and natural hickory smoke flavor.
Sea Salt and Vinegar is similarly animal-free. The Nacho flavor uses lactic acid (plant-derived in this context) and yeast extract rather than real cheese, making it dairy-free.
The Fully Loaded flavor is the worst offender: cheddar cheese, whey, buttermilk, sour cream powder, whey protein concentrate, and milk fat all appear in the seasoning. The Ridges Cheddar and Sour Cream line is equally heavy with dairy.
PopChips does carry a Certified Vegan mark for some individual flavors on their packaging; it does NOT apply to the whole product range. In the UK, the Sour Cream and Onion PopChips is labelled suitable for vegans and uses a plant-based sour cream flavor, but the US version uses real dairy, the UK and US formulations differ, so check the country on the pack.

Frequently asked
Is PopChips Vegan?
PopChips are popped (not fried) potato chips sold in a wide range of flavors. Other flavors, Sour Cream and Onion, Fully Loaded, Cheddar and Sour Cream (Ridges), Aged White Cheddar, contain dairy in multiple forms. The brand is not vegan across the board; you have to check the specific flavor.
Are PopChips gluten-free?
Yes. All current PopChips flavors carry certification from the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). The base is potato and rice flour, not wheat.
Are PopChips kosher?
Yes. The PopChips FAQ states that all PopChips are certified kosher by OU Kosher.
Are PopChips made on shared equipment with milk?
PopChips publishes no shared-line or cross-contact statement. Because the Aged White Cheddar flavor (still in retail circulation) contains milk, whey, and buttermilk powder, cross-contact at the manufacturing level cannot be ruled out. Anyone with a severe milk allergy should contact PopChips directly before eating any flavor.
Were PopChips Sour Cream and Onion ever non-vegan?
Yes. The original US Sour Cream and Onion formula contained dairy ingredients including sour cream powder and buttermilk. The product was reformulated and the current version listed on popchips.com is dairy-free and carries a vegan mark. Bags from older production runs may still be on retail shelves, so checking the printed ingredient list on the specific bag is the safest move.
Are UK PopChips the same as US PopChips?
The formulas differ. The UK Sour Cream and Onion (sold at Waitrose, listed as suitable for vegans on Amazon UK) uses a plant-based sour cream flavoring with no dairy in the ingredient list, consistent with the US reformulation. However, the UK site lists 'Sour Cream and Onion Flavour' as a compound ingredient without specifying dairy or non-dairy sources, so the labeling is less transparent than the US version. Other UK flavors (Sea Salt, BBQ, Sea Salt and Vinegar) also use sunflower oil rather than the avocado oil used in the US.
What is the catch with PopChips?
The savory cheese and sour cream flavors load up on whey, buttermilk, cheddar, sour cream powder, and nonfat dry milk, every classic dairy form shows up.
What can I use instead of PopChips?
Vegan options include Kettle Brand Sea Salt chips (vegan), Late July Sea Salt tortilla chips (vegan), Good Health Avocado Oil kettle chips sea salt (vegan), Siete Grain Free tortilla chips (most flavors vegan).
Is PopChips certified vegan?
PopChips does not carry a third-party vegan certification, so the verdict here is based on its current ingredient list and manufacturer information.
