Is Ragu Pasta Sauce Vegan?

It Depends

Not certified

Most of Ragu's plain tomato-based sauces (Traditional, Marinara, Mushroom, Roasted Garlic, Simply line, Kettle Cooked line) are vegan. But Ragu also sells a large cheese sauce category, a meat sauce, and a couple of sneaky red sauces that contain Parmesan and Romano. About a third of the lineup is off the table for vegans.

The catch: Mama's Special Garden Sauce looks like a plain vegetable red sauce but contains Parmesan and Romano cheese. The name gives no hint.

Brand

Ragu

Ragu's vegan-safe options include all of the Simply line (Traditional, Roasted Garlic, Tomato Basil), all Kettle Cooked varieties (Marinara, Tomato Basil, Roasted Garlic, Italian Herbs, Spicy Italian), and most of the Chunky and Old World Style tomato sauces (Mushroom, Marinara, Traditional, Tomato Garlic Onion, Garden Combination, Mushroom and Green Pepper, Sauteed Onion and Garlic, Roasted Garlic, Hearty Traditional). Non-vegan products to avoid: the entire Cheese Sauces category (Classic Alfredo, Four Cheese Alfredo, Butter Parmesan, Double Cheddar, Roasted Garlic Parmesan), Old World Style Meat Sauce (contains cooked ground beef), Old World Style Six Cheese Sauce, Old World Style Parmesan and Romano Sauce, Chunky Mama's Special Garden Sauce (contains Parmesan and Romano despite sounding plant-based), and Alfredo with Bacon.

The rule of thumb is that any Ragu red sauce without "Cheese" or "Meat" in the name is almost certainly vegan, but Mama's Special Garden is the outlier that breaks that pattern. Always check the label because Ragu reformulates periodically.

The brand is owned by Mizkan America as of the mid-2010s.
