Is Lightlife Vegan?

Lightlife started in 1979 in Greenfield, Massachusetts as Tempeh Works before officially becoming Lightlife in 1984. It was acquired by Maple Leaf Foods in 2017 and operates under the Greenleaf Foods SPC subsidiary.

In May 2021, Lightlife completed a full reformulation of 19 products, removing egg and maltodextrin from many products, meaning any pre-2021 non-vegan concerns about egg are now resolved. Smart Dogs and Jumbo Smart Dogs are America's top-selling plant-based hot dogs, made from soy protein isolate, pea protein, and soybean oil; they are labeled vegan and marketed as Non-GMO Project Verified, though shoppers should confirm current packaging as certification labeling can change with reformulations.

Smart Bacon strips use wheat gluten and soy protein isolate with natural smoke flavors, no dairy or egg, and carry vegan labeling. Gimme Lean Sausage is a ground sausage-style roll made from soy protein concentrate, labeled vegan and kosher pareve, and remains available at major retailers as of 2025-2026.

Smart Ground Original and Smart Ground Mexican are refrigerated crumble-style products made from soy protein concentrate, both vegan-labeled. The deli slices line (Korean BBQ, Roasted Garlic, Hardwood Smoked) uses wheat gluten and soy protein isolate as the protein base, with sesame oil and spices, confirmed fully vegan by third-party ingredient audits through late 2024.

All tempeh products carry USDA Organic and are fully plant-based. No Lightlife product contains dairy, egg, honey, gelatin, or other animal byproduct.

The parent company Greenleaf Foods has publicly committed to carbon neutrality. Some products use soy protein concentrate or isolate, both vegan.

Some products, such as Smart Dogs, still list carrageenan, which is a seaweed-derived (plant) ingredient and does not affect the vegan status.
