Is Lotus Biscoff Speculoos Cookies Vegan?

The original caramelized speculoos biscuit has a short, clean ingredient list: wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oils (soybean, sunflower, canola, and/or palm), brown sugar syrup, sodium bicarbonate, soy flour, salt, and cinnamon. Lotus Bakeries confirms on their UK FAQ that all speculoos and speculoos spread are suitable for vegans.

The Biscoff Cookie Butter spread (creamy and crunchy) is also vegan and is explicitly labeled as such on packaging sold in the US. The sticking point for some strict vegans is palm oil.

Lotus is an RSPO member and claims certified sustainable and traceable palm oil, but palm cultivation is still linked to habitat destruction and orangutan displacement, so eco-conscious vegans may choose to avoid it regardless. On that basis some vegan advocacy sites rate the cookies as technically vegan but not fully aligned with all ethical-vegan standards.

The Biscoff chocolate cookies (sold individually as a separate SKU, often in brown foil wrapping) contain real Belgian chocolate made with skimmed milk powder and butter oil, which rules them out entirely. Lotus ice cream products also contain dairy and are not vegan.

Region does not appear to affect the original cookie formula in any meaningful way, but always check the label if buying an unfamiliar Biscoff product since the line has expanded.
