Is Nutella Vegan?

Not Vegan

Not certified

Standard Nutella contains skimmed milk powder and is not vegan. The classic jar sold in every market worldwide lists milk as its third ingredient, making up roughly 8.7% of the product by weight. Ferrero launched a separate Nutella Plant-Based line in Europe starting September 2024, which swaps dairy for chickpeas and rice syrup and carries Vegetarian Society vegan certification, but that is a different product entirely and is not available everywhere.

The catch: Skimmed milk powder is baked into the original recipe worldwide, not a regional variant or trace cross-contact note. It is a core ingredient.

Ferrero launched Nutella Plant-Based in Italy, France, and Belgium in September 2024, then expanded to Germany for Veganuary 2025 and the UK in May 2025. That product uses chickpeas and rice syrup powder to replace the milk function and is certified vegan by the Vegetarian Society.
